Bharatpur's Keoladeo Ghana National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's great bird sanctuaries — a 29 sq km wetland hosting 370+ bird species and the winter home of migratory birds from Siberia, China and Central Asia. What was once a royal duck-hunting preserve (the Viceroy's party once shot 4,273 birds in a single day) is now one of Earth's most important avian habitats. October–March brings extraordinary concentrations of migratory birds — Eurasian Cranes, Greater Spotted Eagles, tens of thousands of ducks and geese. In summer, spectacular breeding colonies of painted storks, spoonbills and herons nest in the treetops. The park has no motor vehicles inside — only cycle rickshaws and bicycles — making it the most peaceful wildlife experience near Delhi. Bharatpur also has the formidable Lohagarh Fort (1732) that successfully resisted two British sieges.
