Jaipur — the "Pink City" — is the capital of Rajasthan and one of the most visited cities in India, a founding point of the Golden Triangle (Delhi–Agra–Jaipur) and one of the subcontinent's finest planned cities. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II (an astronomer-king), Jaipur was designed on a grid with remarkable foresight and painted in terracotta pink — a colour associated with hospitality — when the Prince of Wales visited in 1876. The colour has stuck and defines the city's identity. Jaipur's forts and palaces are extraordinary in their scale and beauty: Amber Fort (the jewel of Rajput architecture), Nahargarh Fort (with its sunset panorama), City Palace (still the residence of the Jaipur royal family), and the whimsical Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) are all within a few kilometres. The bazaars — blue pottery, block-printed textiles, silver jewellery, lac bangles, gems — are among the finest in India. Jaipur is also the gateway to the entire Rajasthan circuit: Ajmer, Pushkar, Ranthambore and beyond.

Places to Visit in Jaipur
Amber Fort (1592)
The most magnificent fort-palace in Rajasthan — built by Raja Man Singh on a hilltop above Maota Lake, 11 km from Jaipur. The Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace), Ganesh Pol, Diwan-e-Aam and the views from the ramparts are extraordinary. Elephant rides (controversial) or jeep up. Entry ₹200.
Hawa Mahal (1799)
The "Palace of Winds" — a five-storey pink sandstone screen facade with 953 windows (jharokhas) built for the royal women to observe street life without being seen. The interior is modest but the exterior is one of India's most iconic images. Entry ₹50.
City Palace & Museum
The living palace of the Jaipur royal family — one section is still the Maharaja's residence. The Mubarak Mahal (textile museum), the armory, the Diwan-e-Khas and the giant silver vessels (world's largest sterling silver objects, used to carry Ganga water to England) are outstanding.
Jantar Mantar (1734)
The world's largest stone astronomical observatory — built by Maharaja Jai Singh II. 19 architectural instruments, including the Samrat Yantra (world's largest sundial, accurate to 2 seconds). UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry ₹50.

Essential Jaipur Tips

- 🛒Shopping Tips: Avoid shops recommended by auto-rickshaw drivers or touts — they earn commissions. Head directly to the specific bazaars or government emporium Rajasthali (MI Road). Fixed prices, genuine crafts.
