Chandigarh is unlike any other city in India. Designed from scratch by Swiss-French modernist architect Le Corbusier in the 1950s as the new capital of post-partition Punjab, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — one of the most significant examples of 20th-century urban planning. The Capitol Complex (Legislative Assembly, High Court and Secretariat) is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. The Rock Garden — created secretly over 18 years by a single road inspector, Nek Chand, from urban waste and broken ceramics — is one of India's most extraordinary art installations and among its most visited parks. Chandigarh is India's wealthiest city per capita, with the best infrastructure, cleanest streets, and highest quality of life of any Indian city. It combines perfectly with Patiala (50 km) or as a base for Shimla (115 km) for a full weekend.
