Chopta & Tungnath Travel Guide — Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand

Chopta is Uttarakhand's most beautiful secret — a pristine meadow at 2,680 metres in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, often called the "Mini Switzerland of India" for its lush green alpine meadows, dense rhododendron and bugyals (high-altitude meadows) carpeted in wildflowers, and unobstructed views of Kedarnath, Neelkanth, Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba peaks. It is the base for the famous Tungnath Trek — reaching Tungnath (3,460m), the world's highest Shiva temple, and Chandrashila Peak (4,130m) with its 360° Himalayan panorama that many trekkers describe as the best view in all of Garhwal. Unlike Chopta's famous neighbour Kedarnath (which requires extensive planning), Chopta is accessible year-round, requires no registration, and can be visited in a long weekend from Delhi. In winter, Chopta transforms into a snow wonderland — a less crowded alternative to the famous hill stations.

Places to Visit in Chopta

Tungnath Temple (3,460m)

World's highest Shiva temple — 1.5 km steep trek from Chopta. One of the Panch Kedar temples. Open May–November. Simple stone structure with extraordinary setting.

Chandrashila Peak (4,130m)

1 km beyond Tungnath. Summit offers 360° panorama of Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Kedarnath, Trishul, Nanda Devi. One of the finest viewpoints in all of Uttarakhand.

Deoria Tal (2,438m)

3 km trek from Sari village (14 km from Chopta). A high-altitude lake with stunning reflection of Chaukhamba peaks. Camping permitted. Unforgettable dawn.

Rohini Bugyal

6 km from Chopta. A vast high-altitude meadow above the treeline — carpeted in wildflowers in June. Less visited than Tungnath, more peaceful.

  Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek: 3.5 km (Chopta to Chandrashila summit). Start 5 AM for sunrise at summit. Allow 3 hours up, 2 hours down. Moderate difficulty. No guide needed but carry warm layers — summit can be −10°C even in October.

  Camping at Chopta: Several campsites in the meadow and forest. Temperature drops sharply at night — use quality sleeping bag. Book camping packages online. Best June and October.

  Star Gazing: Chopta has minimal light pollution — on clear nights, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Best September–November. Bring a warm blanket and simply lie in the meadow.

  Bird & Wildlife Watching: Chopta is inside Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary — home to musk deer, Himalayan black bear, langur and 200+ bird species including Himalayan Monal (Uttarakhand state bird).

  Last Fuel Station: Fill up in Ukhimath (14 km from Chopta). No petrol stations closer. Similarly, last ATM is in Ukhimath.
