Dalhousie is one of India's most perfectly preserved colonial hill stations — a town that feels genuinely frozen in the 1890s, with Victorian bungalows, Gothic churches, oak-lined promenades and a pace of life that the rest of the country has long forgotten. Founded in 1854 by the British as a summer retreat for troops and civil servants, Dalhousie spreads across five hills at 2,036 metres in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. The views from its various vantage points — particularly from Dainkund Peak — encompass the Pir Panjal range, the Ravi valley and on crystal-clear days, the distant plains stretching all the way to Pakistan. Dalhousie is also the gateway to Khajjiar (the "Mini Switzerland of India" just 24 km away), Chamba town (a kingdom that predates the Mughal empire), and the wilderness of the Chamba valley. The novelist Ruskin Bond spent part of his childhood here and the town's atmosphere of gentle melancholy and mountain beauty saturates his early writing.
