Kausani is where Mahatma Gandhi wrote "Anasakti Yoga" in 1929 and called the view from this ridge "the Switzerland of India" — and almost a century later, that description still holds. At 1,890 metres in the Bageshwar district of Kumaon, Kausani occupies a narrow ridge above dense pine forests, offering an unbroken 300 km panoramic view of the Central Himalayan peaks — Trishul (7,120m), Nanda Devi (7,816m), Panchachuli (6,904m), Nanda Kot and dozens more — that is arguably the finest Himalayan panorama accessible from any road in India. Sunrise here is a daily miracle: the peaks catch fire in shades of orange and pink while the valley below remains in darkness. The town is small, peaceful and unhurried. There are tea gardens, a Gandhi Ashram, an ancient Shiva temple, and walks through forest and village paths that feel genuinely away from the modern world.

Experiences & Activities
- 🌅Sunrise Viewpoint: Set alarm for 5 AM. Walk 10 minutes to the main ridge viewpoint. The Himalayan peaks — Trishul, Nanda Devi, Panchachuli — glow orange-gold at dawn. Bring warm layers (it's cold). The single best reason to visit Kausani.
- 🍵Tea Garden Visit: Gitesh Tea Estate welcomes visitors. See how Himalayan tea is grown, plucked and processed. Buy fresh Kausani green tea and white tea — exceptional quality not found elsewhere.
- 🚶Forest Walks: Multiple forest paths from the town into deodar and pine forests. Peaceful, bird-rich walks. The trail to Rudradhari Falls (8 km one way) is particularly scenic.
- 🛕Baijnath Temple (19 km): A magnificent 12th century Shiva temple complex on the banks of the Gomti River. One of Kumaon's most important ancient temples. Free entry. Worth a half-day excursion.
- 🧘Yoga & Meditation: Several yoga centres and ashrams in Kausani. The altitude, clean air, and mountain views create ideal conditions. Anasakti Ashram offers morning meditation sessions.
