Khajjiar Travel Guide — Mini Switzerland of India

Khajjiar is a place that stops you in your tracks. A perfectly circular meadow of lush emerald grass, ringed by an unbroken wall of ancient deodar cedar forest with a small mirror-like lake in the centre — all set at 2,000 metres against the Dhauladhar range. It is so strikingly similar to an Alpine meadow that in 1992, the Swiss Ambassador to India officially declared Khajjiar the "Mini Switzerland of India" and had a Swiss signpost installed — still standing today, pointing 6,194 km back to Bern. For Indians who have never seen the Alps, Khajjiar is genuinely thrilling. For those who have — it still enchants. The Khajji Nag temple on the meadow edge dates from the 12th century. Adventure activities (zorbing, paragliding, horse riding) operate on the meadow. Khajjiar is best visited as a day trip from Dalhousie (24 km) or as a standalone overnight stay — the meadow at dawn and dusk, when tourists have gone, is magical.

Khajjiar Meadow

The famous circular meadow — a floating island of grass over a small lake, ringed by deodar forest. The Swiss signpost stands at the entrance. Horses, zorbing and paragliding available on the meadow.

Khajji Nag Temple

A 12th century temple dedicated to Khajji Nag (snake god) at the edge of the meadow. Beautiful stone carvings in Himachali style. The temple ceiling is covered in intricate woodwork.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

A 30 sq km sanctuary between Dalhousie and Khajjiar — home to black bear, barking deer, sambhar and 100+ bird species. Forest walks permitted with guide. Entry at HP Forest Dept.

Swiss Signpost & Viewpoint

The landmark Swiss signpost declares the distance to Switzerland — 6,194 km. The viewpoint near it offers the best photograph of the full meadow. Visit at golden hour for the classic shot.

  Kalatop Trek: A beautiful 4 km forest trail through the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. Dense deodar forest, good birdwatching, possible wildlife sightings at dawn. Guide mandatory.

  How to Reach: No direct buses from Delhi to Khajjiar. Take taxi/bus to Dalhousie then local taxi (₹600–800 return). EZPZ can drop at Khajjiar on the way to Dalhousie — ask when booking.
• ⏰
  Avoid Weekends: Khajjiar is extremely crowded on weekends from Pathankot and Chandigarh. Visit on a weekday, or arrive very early (before 9 AM) and leave by noon.

  Meadow Care: Don't litter — Khajjiar's beauty depends on it. The local panchayat actively maintains cleanliness. Use the bins provided.
