McLeodganj — affectionately known as "Little Lhasa" — is one of India's most culturally distinct and spiritually charged destinations. Perched at 1,457 metres above the Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh, McLeodganj has been the home of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile since 1960, when tens of thousands of Tibetan refugees resettled here after China's occupation of Tibet. The result is a town unlike any other in India — Buddhist monasteries and prayer flag-draped streets sit alongside Himalayan cafes serving yak butter tea and momos, while serious trekkers rub shoulders with meditating monks and international yoga students. The Dhauladhar range looms dramatically directly above the town, offering some of the most accessible high-altitude trekking in Himachal Pradesh — from the famous Triund meadow to the challenging Indrahar Pass. McLeodganj is simultaneously a pilgrimage town, a trekking base, a cultural melting pot and one of the most welcoming places in all of India.

- 🙏Dalai Lama Teachings: If His Holiness is giving public teachings during your visit, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Check schedule at dalailama.com. Registration required for foreigners.
- 📸Photography Rules: Always ask before photographing monks or inside temples. Some areas of the Tsuglagkhang complex prohibit photography entirely. Respect is essential.
- 🚗Driving: McLeodganj roads are narrow and crowded — park at Dharamshala and take shared taxi (₹30) up. EZPZ drivers know exactly where to drop and wait.
- 🌧️Monsoon (Jul–Aug): Beautiful lush green but leeches on forest trails — wear covered shoes. Triund trail gets slippery. Not ideal for trekking but town stays lively.
