Prayagraj — the site of the sacred Triveni Sangam where the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers meet — is one of Hinduism's holiest cities and home of the Kumbh Mela, the largest human gathering on Earth. The 2026 Maha Kumbh drew over 400 million pilgrims here. Beyond its spiritual fame, Prayagraj has profound historical depth — birthplace of Nehru and Shastri, setting for key independence-movement events, and home to the magnificent Allahabad Fort (1583, Akbar) and Anand Bhavan (Nehru ancestral home). Post-Kumbh infrastructure has made the city more accessible than ever. Combined with Varanasi (120 km) and Lucknow (200 km), Prayagraj anchors one of India's great heritage circuits.

Places to Visit in Prayagraj
Triveni Sangam
The sacred confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and invisible Saraswati. Take a rowing boat to the exact Sangam point (₹200–400). The visual distinction — blue-green Yamuna meeting brown Ganga — is extraordinary. Bathing here is considered supremely purifying.
Allahabad Fort (1583)
Akbar's massive fort at the Sangam point — one of the largest Mughal forts. The underground Patalpuri Temple and Akshaya Vata (immortal banyan tree) inside are sacred. Partially army-controlled — check civilian entry permissions before visiting.
Anand Bhavan
Ancestral home of the Nehru-Gandhi family — now a national museum. Jawaharlal Nehru was born here. Original furniture, personal belongings and independence-era photographs preserved. Guided tours available. Entry ₹70.
Khusro Bagh
A walled Mughal garden (1606–1622) with magnificent tombs of Prince Khusro, his mother and sister. Extraordinary Mughal architecture entirely off the tourist circuit — peaceful, unvisited, beautifully maintained.
Experiences & Activities
- 🚣Sangam Boat Ride & Holy Dip: Rowing boat to the Sangam point (₹200–400, negotiate before boarding). Pilgrims take ritual dip at the confluence. Sunrise boat ride — golden light on the Ganga — is deeply beautiful.
- 🕯️Ganga Aarti at Sangam Ghat: Evening aarti at the ghats near Sangam — more intimate than Haridwar or Varanasi. Priests with oil lamps perform the ceremony as the rivers glow golden at sunset.
- 🏛️Anand Bhavan & Swaraj Bhavan: Two adjacent heritage museums — Anand Bhavan (Nehru family) and the older Swaraj Bhavan (donated to Indian National Congress). Essential for Indian history enthusiasts. Allow 2 hours for both.
- 🕌Khusro Bagh & Old City Walk: The atmospheric Mughal garden complex with three ornate tombs. Walk into the old city for Chowk market, the original Allahabad University buildings, and the 1858 Minto Park where Queen Victoria's proclamation was read.
- 🌊Magh Mela (Annual, January): Every January, millions of pilgrims gather at the Sangam for the month-long Magh Mela sacred fair — a taste of the Kumbh experience every year. The tent city on the Sangam banks is a world unto itself.

- 🚣Boat Touts: Agree price before boarding (₹200–400 for Sangam point return). Government UTSDA boats at fixed price are safer. Avoid unofficial operators who approach on the ghat steps.
- 🌊Bathing Safety: Only bathe Oct–Mar when currents are manageable. July–September has dangerous water levels. Life jackets available on boats.
