The Shimla Railway Station and Mall Road are about 2 km apart — it's one of the shortest taxi trips you'll take in India.
Taxi fare: ₹100–₹200 (~$1.05–$2.10 USD) for the one-way trip. Prepaid taxis at the station entrance typically charge a fixed ₹150. The ride takes 10–15 minutes by road.
The walking option (popular with travellers): Many visitors choose to walk — it takes 20–30 minutes uphill and gives you your first proper look at Shimla's colonial-era architecture and hill scenery. If you're travelling light, this is genuinely the better option. The walk is steep in places but well-paved.
Important — no vehicles on Mall Road: Taxis drop you at Cart Road or the Lower Bazaar approach. The last 5–10 minutes to Mall Road itself is always on foot regardless of how you arrive. Shimla's Mall Road is a pedestrian-only zone.
| Route | Fare (INR) | Fare (USD) | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Station → Mall Road (taxi) | ₹100–₹200 | ~$1.05–$2.10 | 10–15 min |
| Station → Mall Road (walk) | Free | Free | 25–30 min |
| Shimla Airport → Mall Road | ₹1,500–₹2,000 | ~$15.75–$21 | 30–35 min |
From Delhi: If you're planning the full journey from Delhi to Shimla (360 km), EZPZ Taxi fixed fares start at ₹3,780 for a hatchback (~$39.80 USD) and ₹4,500 for a sedan (~$47.35 USD) — dropping you directly at your hotel, not just the railway station.
US travellers note: The toy train from Kalka to Shimla is a UNESCO World Heritage experience worth taking if you have time — but most visitors on a schedule take a direct cab from Delhi which is faster and more comfortable for groups.
