Udaipur — the "City of Lakes" — is consistently rated one of the most beautiful cities in India and one of the most romantic in the world. Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II beside the shimmering Lake Pichola and backed by the Aravalli hills, Udaipur is a city of white marble palaces reflected in still water, of flower-draped havelis in narrow cobblestone lanes, of the most spectacular lake palace in Asia, and of a royal family (the Mewar dynasty — the oldest surviving royal dynasty in the world, 1,400 years of unbroken lineage) that takes extraordinary pride in their heritage. The City Palace — a 400-year accumulation of palaces, courtyards, towers and gardens — is the largest royal complex in Rajasthan. The Lake Palace Hotel (Jag Niwas, 1746), rising from Lake Pichola like a white marble dream, is one of the world's most famous hotels. Udaipur is also the base for the Kumbhalgarh Fort (84 km), whose walls are the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China.

Places to Visit in Udaipur
City Palace & Museum
The largest palace complex in Rajasthan — 400 years of architectural additions. The Crystal Gallery (largest private crystal collection in the world), Moti Mahal, Mor Chowk (peacock courtyard) and the museum are outstanding. Entry ₹300.
Lake Pichola & Sunset Boat Ride
The magnificent artificial lake created in 1362. Evening boat ride from City Palace jetty (₹700) past Jag Niwas (Lake Palace Hotel) and Jag Mandir island palace — watching the sun set behind the Aravalli hills over the lake is one of India's great travel experiences.
Jagdish Temple (1651)
An Indo-Aryan style temple 200m from the City Palace — dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The largest temple in Udaipur with an extraordinary carved exterior. Active at dawn (5 AM) and dusk — the devotional atmosphere is authentic and moving.
Kumbhalgarh Fort (84 km)
A 15th-century Mewar fort with walls 38 km long — the second longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. The fort is remote and dramatic, set in a wildlife sanctuary. Combine with Ranakpur Jain Temples (25 km from Kumbhalgarh) for a full day.
Experiences & Activities
- 🚣Lake Pichola Sunset Boat Ride: The essential Udaipur experience — ₹700 from City Palace jetty, 45 minutes. The light on the Lake Palace and the reflections in the still water at golden hour are extraordinary. Book through your hotel to skip the queue.
- 🏰City Palace Exploration: Allow 3 hours minimum. Hire a guide (₹300) — the stories of the Mewar dynasty and the architectural evolution are as compelling as the spaces themselves. The Crystal Gallery requires a separate ticket (₹600).
- 🛕Kumbhalgarh & Ranakpur Day Trip (84 km): Kumbhalgarh Fort with its 38 km wall + Ranakpur Jain Temples (1439 CE, 1,444 carved marble columns — one of the finest examples of Jain architecture) make a superb full day from Udaipur.
- 🎨Old City & Gangaur Ghat Walk: The old city lanes behind Jagdish Temple — miniature painting galleries, blue pottery shops, folk music venues. Gangaur Ghat at sunset for the lake view with locals rather than tourists.

Essential Udaipur Tips
- 🚣Lake Palace Hotel: Non-guests cannot visit the Lake Palace — it is a private Taj hotel. The boat ride from City Palace jetty gives the best view of the exterior. If budget allows, the Sunday brunch (₹4,000/person) is open to non-guests — book in advance.
- 📸Best Photo Spot: Ambrai Ghat (opposite the City Palace across the lake) gives the classic Udaipur photograph — City Palace and Lake Palace reflected in Lake Pichola. Golden hour is extraordinary here.
