Haridwar — one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism — is where the Ganga descends from the Himalayas onto the plains. Every 12 years it hosts the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest human gathering. Here's a complete guide to what to see and do:
Top Attractions in Haridwar
1. Har Ki Pauri — The Sacred Ghat
The most important ghat in Haridwar — a footprint of Lord Vishnu is said to be embedded in the stone. This is where the Ganga Aarti happens every evening. The ghat is always crowded with pilgrims taking a holy dip. Best experienced at 5–6 AM at dawn and at aarti time at sunset.
2. Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri
Every evening at sunset — priests hold large flame lamps (deepas) while chanting, bells ring, and thousands of pilgrims watch from the ghats and bridges. This is the most dramatic Ganga Aarti in India — larger and more spectacular than Rishikesh's. Arrive 45 minutes early for a good spot on the ghat steps.
3. Chandi Devi Temple (Neel Parvat)
Across the Ganga, on top of Neel Parvat hill. Reach by aerial ropeway (₹205 return) or a steep 3 km hike. One of the Char Dham of Haridwar. Views of the city and Ganga from the top.
4. Mansa Devi Temple
On the Bilwa Parvat hill above Har Ki Pauri — another of the Char Dham. Ropeway available (₹175 return). Devotees tie threads on the trees to make wishes.
5. Maya Devi Temple
One of the oldest temples in Haridwar — considered one of the Shakti Peethas (sacred feminine power spots). In the old city, atmospheric surroundings.
6. Shantikunj & Gayatri Teerth
Large ashram complex — peace gardens, meditation, daily yoga sessions. Free to visit.
