Almora Travel Guide

Almora is the cultural and commercial heart of the Kumaon Hills — an ancient horseshoe-shaped ridge town perched at 1,638 metres with a legacy stretching back to the Chand Rajput dynasty of the 16th century. Unlike the cantonment towns of Ranikhet and Lansdowne, Almora is a living, breathing hill town — its bazaar lanes narrow and atmospheric, its old wooden houses leaning over cobbled streets, its temples dating back five centuries. The famous Kasar Devi ridge above Almora has been a magnet for seekers and artists for over a century: Swami Vivekananda meditated here in 1890, D.H. Lawrence wrote here, Bob Dylan visited, and the painter Kumaon Hills artist Boris Lissanevitch called it his spiritual home. Today, Kasar Devi remains a place of remarkable energy and continues to attract meditators and travellers from around the world. Almora's handmade copper craft, Bal Mithai (local sweet), and traditional handloom shawls are famous across India.

Chitai Golu Devta Temple

Famous temple of Golu Devta — the folk deity of Kumaon believed to grant justice. Thousands of brass bells and petition letters covering every surface. Extraordinary sight. 8 km from Almora.

Kasar Devi Temple & Ridge

A 2,000-year-old temple on a ridge above Almora, at the intersection of Van Allen radiation belts — scientists have identified it as one of three such "charged" zones globally. Meditation centre of the hill world.

Bright End Corner

Sunset viewpoint at the western end of Almora ridge. The view of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Panchachuli peaks in evening light from here is among the finest in all of Kumaon.

Almora Bazaar

The historic main bazaar of Almora — narrow lanes, old wooden shop fronts, copper craft workshops, Bal Mithai shops, local produce. Katarmal Sun Temple (12 km) — 9th century, one of India's most important sun temples.

  Simtola Eco Park: A peaceful forest park 3 km from Almora with an oak and rhododendron trail. Bird watching, picnics, short treks. Small entry fee. Good for families.
