Badrinath Travel Guide

Badrinath — one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism and a cornerstone of the Char Dham pilgrimage — sits dramatically at 3,133 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, nestled between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges with the snow-capped Neelkanth peak (6,596m) towering behind it. The Alaknanda River flows beside the temple complex, adding to the spiritual and visual majesty. Every year between May and November, over half a million devotees journey here to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu. The temple is one of 108 Divya Desams — the sacred abodes of Vishnu — and is considered so powerful that a single darshan is believed to liberate one from the cycle of rebirth. Beyond the temple, Badrinath rewards explorers with hot springs, a nearby Indian border village, glacial treks and some of the most dramatic Himalayan scenery in all of Uttarakhand.

Badrinath Temple (Main Shrine)

The sacred temple of Lord Badrinarayan with a vibrant polychrome facade. Black stone idol in meditative posture. Darshan: 4:30 AM–1 PM · 3 PM–9 PM. Pre-book Abhishek Puja online.

Tapt Kund Hot Spring

Natural sulphur hot spring at 45°C beside the Alaknanda River. Pilgrims bathe before darshan — considered purifying and mandatory for the devout. Steam rising in cold mountain air is a remarkable sight.

Mana Village (3 km)

India's last village before the Tibet border. Home to Vyas Gufa (where Mahabharata was composed), Bhim Pul (single boulder bridge), and the 9 km trail to spectacular Vasudhara Falls.

Brahma Kapal · Charanpaduka

Brahma Kapal — sacred platform for ancestral rites (pind daan) on the Alaknanda bank. Charanpaduka — rock bearing Vishnu's footprints above the temple with panoramic valley views.

  Mana Village Exploration: 3 km from Badrinath — drive or walk. Visit Vyas Gufa (cave where Mahabharata was written), Bhim Pul (natural rock bridge), Saraswati River, and onward trek to Vasudhara Falls.

  Vasudhara Falls Trek (9 km return): A 145-metre waterfall from Mana Village — 3 km trek one way. Legend: water falls away from sinners. Outstanding Himalayan scenery throughout the trail.

  Satopanth Lake Trek (2 days): Advanced 24 km return trek to a glacial lake at 4,402m with a triangular shoreline. Expert trekkers only. Stunning views of Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Swargarohini.

  Neelkanth Peak Views: The 6,596m "Queen of Garhwal" towers directly behind the temple. Dawn and dusk light on Neelkanth is extraordinary — be at the riverside by 5 AM for best colour.

Essential Badrinath Tips

  Yatra Registration: Mandatory at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. Medical certificate required. Register at least 1 week before travel.
• 🏔️
  Altitude Acclimatisation: Do NOT go directly Delhi → Badrinath in one day. Spend a night at Rishikesh (360m) then Joshimath (1,890m) before Badrinath (3,133m). Altitude sickness is real and serious.
• 🌧️
  Monsoon Road Warning: NH-7 Joshimath–Badrinath has landslide risk July–August. Check road status daily. EZPZ drivers monitor conditions — call us before departure.
• 💰
  Cash & ATMs: Carry sufficient cash from Haridwar. ATMs in Badrinath are unreliable in peak season. BSNL and Jio have limited connectivity beyond Joshimath.
• 👗
  Dress Code: Traditional attire inside temple. Remove shoes at entrance. Even in May–June, carry warm layers — nights drop to 0°C. Rain poncho essential.
• 🍽️
  Food: Pure vegetarian — no meat or alcohol in Badrinath valley. Dharamshalas serve simple, good sattvic food. Prasad from temple: badri-tulsi, dry fruits, panchamrit.
