Kedarnath Travel Guide

Kedarnath — one of Hinduism's twelve sacred Jyotirlingas and a cornerstone of the Char Dham pilgrimage — sits at a dramatic 3,583 metres in the Rudra Himalayas. The ancient stone temple, believed to be over 1,200 years old and originally built by the Pandavas, is the most dramatically situated of all Char Dham shrines. To reach it, pilgrims must trek 16 km each way from Gaurikund — a journey through alpine meadows, glacial rivers and thin mountain air that is itself a profound spiritual experience. The 2013 floods devastated the region but the temple stood firm — many believe miraculously. Today, Kedarnath draws millions of devotees each season. In Hinduism, it is believed that a pilgrimage to Kedarnath washes away sins of three lifetimes.

Kedarnath Temple

Ancient stone temple of Lord Shiva with a triangular-shaped Shivalinga. Darshan: 4 AM–2 PM, 5 PM–9 PM daily. Abhishek puja at 4:30 AM.

Bhairavnath Temple

Guardian deity of Kedarnath. 500m from main temple on a ridge with panoramic Himalayan panoramas. Must visit after main darshan.

Gandhi Sarovar (Chorabari Tal)

3 km trek from Kedarnath temple. A glacial lake where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed. Surrounded by soaring peaks.

Vasuki Tal

5 km beyond Kedarnath at 4,135m. High-altitude glacial lake with reflection of Chaukhamba peaks. For experienced trekkers only.

  Helicopter Service: Skip the trek with helicopter from Phata, Guptkashi or Sirsi (₹3,500–5,500 one way). Book at heliservices.uk.gov.in or IRCTC. Book months in advance.

  Pony & Palki: Ponies (₹2,500–3,500 return), palanquins (₹5,000–8,000 return) available from Gaurikund. Pre-book at the Gaurikund booking counter early morning.

  Vasuki Tal Trek: 5 km beyond Kedarnath at 4,135m. One of the most beautiful glacial lakes in Uttarakhand with Chaukhamba reflection. Expert trekkers only.

  Sunrise Photography: The golden light hitting the temple and Kedarnath peak at dawn is extraordinary. Be at the temple by 5 AM for best light.

  Mandakini River: The sacred Mandakini flows beside the trail. Several spots for ritual bathing (very cold — glacial water). Near Sonprayag is popular.

  Altitude Acclimatisation: Kedarnath is at 3,583m. Spend a night in Guptkashi (1,319m) before trekking up. Carry Diamox if prone to altitude sickness. Consult your doctor.

  No Network Beyond Sonprayag: Download offline maps before leaving Guptkashi. BSNL has limited coverage near temple. Inform family of your schedule in advance.

  What to Pack: Thermal layers, rain poncho, warm jacket, trekking shoes (mandatory — not sandals), glucose sachets, personal medicines, sunscreen SPF 50+, woollen cap.

  Water & Food: Boiled/packaged water available along trail. Food stalls at Jungle Chatti, Bheembali. Carry energy bars. Pure vegetarian — no alcohol along the entire route.
