Chail Travel Guide

Chail is one of Himachal Pradesh's most charming secrets — a small hill retreat at 2,250 metres perched above the Shimla-Solan valley, nestled in fragrant deodar and pine forest. Chail was created in 1891 by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala — who was reportedly banned from Shimla by Lord Kitchener after a disagreement — as his own personal summer capital, even grander than Shimla in his ambitions. The Maharaja built a palace, a polo ground, and famously, a cricket ground at 2,444 metres — which remains to this day the world's highest cricket ground, still in active use. Chail has none of the commercialism of Shimla or Kasauli — its narrow forest roads, old palace buildings, wildlife sanctuary, and military school give it a distinctive, slightly time-capsule quality that sophisticated travellers increasingly seek. The forest around Chail is dense, beautiful, and rich with wildlife.

Places to Visit in Chail

Chail Cricket Ground (2,444m)

The world's highest cricket ground — established 1893. A perfect grass pitch surrounded by ancient deodar trees at 2,444m. Still in active use. You can stand on the crease and have a bowl — extraordinary experience.

Chail Palace (now Heritage Hotel)

The Maharaja of Patiala's extraordinary summer palace — now run by HPTDC as a heritage hotel. The architecture, gardens and grounds are magnificent. Non-guests can visit the grounds and restaurant. Book at hptdc.nic.in.

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary

A 110 sq km sanctuary surrounding the town — home to barking deer, sambar, red jungle fowl, kalij pheasant, leopard and Himalayan black bear. Jeep safaris and guided forest walks available.

Kali ka Tibba

3 km trek from Chail — the highest point in the area at 2,444m (same as cricket ground). A Kali temple at the summit with panoramic views of Shimla, Solan valley and distant snow peaks.

  Cricket Ground Visit: Walk to the world's highest cricket ground (1 km from centre). Have a photograph on the crease. If you're lucky, local matches are played on weekends. Utterly unique.

  Chail Palace Exploration: Even if not staying, visit the palace grounds (₹25 entry). The Maharaja's polo ground, old swimming pool, and heritage buildings are fascinating. Restaurant on site is good.

  Wildlife Sanctuary Jeep Safari: Morning (6–9 AM) jeep safaris through the sanctuary. Book through Chail Palace or local tour operators. Barking deer sightings almost guaranteed; leopard possible.

  Forest Walks: Multiple forest trails from town through deodar and pine forest. The Kali Tibba trek (3 km) is the most rewarding. Shorter walks to Sidh Baba Ka Mandir through forest.

  Snow Activities (Dec–Feb): Chail receives regular snowfall. Snowball fights, snowman building, and short snow walks on the forest trails. No organised skiing but the setting is magical.

  Road to Chail: Last 22 km from Kandaghat is a winding, single-lane mountain road. Avoid driving after dark. The road is in decent condition but requires careful driving.

  Limited Connectivity: Mobile networks are patchy in Chail. BSNL and Jio have the best coverage. WiFi available at Chail Palace. Inform family before entering the forest area.

  Book Palace Early: Chail Palace (HPTDC) is the most atmospheric stay but has limited rooms. Book at hptdc.nic.in months ahead for weekends and peak season.

  Combine with Shimla: Chail is 45 km from Shimla — ideal for a 2-night extension. Delhi → Shimla → Chail → Kufri → Delhi is a superb 3-day Himachal circuit.
