Gangotri is where the mighty Ganga begins her sacred 2,525 km journey to the Bay of Bengal. At 3,415 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, Gangotri is the third stop of the Char Dham pilgrimage and one of the most spiritually electrifying places in India. The Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, stands beside the Bhagirathi River — the Ganga's name at its source — where the water runs an ethereal turquoise-blue, cold enough to take your breath away. The actual glacier source — the Gangotri Glacier — lies 19 km further at Gaumukh (4,023m), where the river pours from under a glacier shaped like a cow's mouth (Gaumukh means exactly that). The region has been a site of meditation and pilgrimage for thousands of years, with numerous ancient ashrams and caves used by sages and saints carved into the surrounding rock faces.

Places to Visit in Gangotri
Gangotri Temple
18th century temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The main shrine is below the floor level — devotees descend steps to darshan. Bhagirathi Shila (the rock where King Bhagirath meditated) is nearby.
Gaumukh Glacier (19 km trek)
The actual source of the Ganga at 4,023m. The glacier snout is shaped like a cow's mouth. One of India's most iconic treks — permit required from Forest Department.
Tapovan (4,463m)
5 km beyond Gaumukh across the glacier. A flat meadow surrounded by Shivling, Bhagirathi peaks and Meru — considered one of the world's greatest mountaineering base camps.
Surya Kund & Brahma Kund
Natural kunds (pools) of ice-cold Bhagirathi water near the temple. Pilgrims take ritual dips here before darshan. Extremely cold but considered highly purifying.

- 📸Sunrise at Gangotri: The Bhagirathi peaks glow pink-gold at dawn with the turquoise river below. Be at the riverside by 5:30 AM for extraordinary photographs.
