Jaisalmer — the "Golden City" — is one of the most extraordinary places in India: a medieval honey-coloured sandstone city rising from the Thar Desert, dominated by a living fort (Sonar Quila) that has been continuously inhabited for 850 years and glows like hammered gold at sunset. Founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal on a 76-metre rocky outcrop, Jaisalmer grew rich on the Silk Road camel caravans and left behind a legacy of extraordinary carved architecture — the fort palaces, the elaborate merchant havelis (Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli), and the intricate jali (lattice) stonework that is unmatched in India. The Thar Desert surrounding the city provides the other half of Jaisalmer's appeal — the Sam Sand Dunes, 45 km out, offer overnight camel safaris, jeep rides and sleeping under a billion stars in the desert silence. Jaisalmer is the most remote and most magical of the Rajasthan golden triangle, and the one visitors most often say they wish they'd stayed longer.

Sonar Quila — The Living Fort

The only living fort in India — 3,000 people still live inside. Narrow golden lanes, havelis, temples, restaurants and guesthouses all inside the fort walls. Best explored on foot in the early morning before tour buses arrive. Entry to Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum ₹250.

Patwon Ki Haveli

Five connected havelis built between 1800–1860 by five Jain merchant brothers. 60 intricately carved sandstone facades — the most elaborate in Jaisalmer. The interior has original furniture, paintings and mirror work. Entry ₹100.

Sam Sand Dunes (45 km)

The most accessible Thar Desert dune field — 30 km of pure sand dunes on the India-Pakistan border. Camel safaris, jeep rides, overnight tent camps. Sunset at Sam — silhouettes of camels against the orange sky — is the quintessential Jaisalmer image.

Gadisar Lake

A beautiful 14th-century royal reservoir 1 km from the fort — surrounded by temples, ghats and a magnificent gateway. Migratory birds in winter. Sunrise over the water with the fort in the background is one of Jaisalmer's loveliest moments.

  Fort Morning Walk: Enter the fort at 7 AM before the crowds. The golden stone in morning light is extraordinary. Walk to Raj Mahal (palace), Jain temples inside the fort (extraordinary carvings), and the fort rampart view over the desert city.

  Sunset at Vyas Chhatri: The hill of royal cenotaphs 500m from the fort — the best view of Sonar Quila glowing gold at sunset, with the desert extending to the horizon. One of India's most beautiful sunsets.

  Langas & Manganiyar Folk Music: Jaisalmer's indigenous folk musicians — the Langas and Manganiyars — perform at desert camps and cultural venues. The haunting Rajasthani music over a desert fire is a sublime experience.

  Stay Inside the Fort: Some heritage guesthouses inside the fort walls (₹800–3,000) give an extraordinary experience — waking up to the morning call to prayer and the golden light on stone. The fort is slowly being damaged by drainage issues — support conservation by choosing heritage guesthouses.

  Desert Heat: October–March the days can still reach 28°C. Carry water constantly. Avoid dune camel rides in the afternoon heat — do them at sunrise or sunset only.

  Golden Hour Photography: Jaisalmer at golden hour (30 min before sunset) is extraordinary — carry a camera. Vyas Chhatri hill and the fort rampart give the best angles.
