Jammu — the "City of Temples" and winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir — is one of North India's most significant pilgrimage destinations and the gateway to two of the subcontinent's great journeys: the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage (8–10 million pilgrims annually) and the road to Kashmir. At 327m on the banks of the Tawi River, Jammu blends Dogra Hindu culture and Kashmiri Islamic culture into a warm, distinct character. The Raghunath Temple complex (1857) — seven shrines under one roof with gold-plated shikhara — is one of North India's most impressive temple complexes. The Bahu Fort (3,000 years old) overlooks the Tawi River. The Amar Mahal Palace (1890, French style) has extraordinary river views. And 50 km north, Katra is the base for the legendary 14 km trek to Vaishno Devi — the cave shrine of the Goddess at 1,560m in the Trikuta Hills.
