Lansdowne is Uttarakhand's most underrated hill station — a perfectly preserved British-era cantonment town that feels like it has been frozen in the 1940s. At 1,706 metres in the Pauri Garhwal district, Lansdowne sits quietly above oak, pine and rhododendron forests with sweeping Himalayan views to the north. Unlike the commercialised chaos of Mussoorie or Nainital, Lansdowne has deliberately stayed small and clean — partly because it remains an active Indian Army cantonment (home of the Garhwal Rifles). There are no large hotels, no crowds, and no blaring music. What there is: crisp mountain air, peaceful forest walks, old stone churches, colonial-era buildings, and on clear winter mornings, a jaw-dropping panorama of Himalayan peaks from Kedarnath to Nanda Devi that stretches across the entire northern horizon. It is the perfect weekend escape from Delhi that most Delhiites don't know about yet.

Experiences & Activities
- 🚶Forest Walks: Unmarked trails through dense oak and rhododendron forest on the ridge. In March–April, rhododendrons bloom crimson — magical. Carry a map or hire local guide.
- 🦅Birdwatching: Lansdowne is a birder's paradise — pheasants, woodpeckers, flycatchers, hill mynas, Himalayan griffons. Dawn walks in the forest are particularly rewarding.
- 🏔️Himalayan View Point: On clear October–February mornings, the view of the Garhwal Himalaya from Tip n Top is comparable to any premium hill station in India. Bring binoculars.
- ⛺Camping: Basic camping allowed in designated forest areas outside cantonment. Contact Uttarakhand Tourism for permissions.
- 🏛️Darwan Singh Negi Museum: Dedicated to the first Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross, Rifleman Darwan Singh Negi. Fascinating WWI history from a Garhwali perspective.
