Leh Ladakh is India's most dramatic and otherworldly destination — a high-altitude desert kingdom at 3,524 metres, squeezed between the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges, where the sky is impossibly blue, the mountains are impossibly bare, and the Buddhist monasteries that cling to clifftops have been there for a thousand years. Ladakh was an independent kingdom for centuries, a crossroads of the ancient Silk Road, and today it preserves a Tibetan Buddhist culture that has largely vanished from Tibet itself. The landscapes are singular: turquoise glacial lakes (Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri), sand dunes at 3,000m (Nubra Valley), rivers carved through lunar-grey rock (Zanskar), and mountain passes that touch 5,359 metres. The Khardung La — the world's highest motorable road at 5,359m — is now a rite of passage for every Indian road tripper. Ladakh is accessible June–October (road) or year-round (flight). It requires acclimatisation, planning, and a willingness to be humbled by scale — and it rewards all of these a hundredfold.

Places to Visit in Leh Ladakh
Pangong Tso Lake (4,350m)
The iconic 134 km glacial lake straddling India and China — its colour shifts from turquoise to blue to green to silver within hours. 160 km from Leh (4–5 hrs drive). Camping at lake edge. Permit required (Inner Line).
Khardung La Pass (5,359m)
The world's highest motorable road — 38 km from Leh. Most visitors cross it on the way to Nubra Valley. The signboard at the top is mandatory selfie territory. Altitude sickness is real here — acclimatise in Leh first.
Thiksey & Hemis Monasteries
Thiksey (12-storey monastery resembling Potala Palace, 17 km from Leh) and Hemis (largest gompa in Ladakh, annual Hemis Festival in June/July) are the two essential monastery visits. Both have remarkable murals, thangkas and statues.
Nubra Valley & Hunder Sand Dunes
Cross Khardung La to reach the "Valley of Flowers" — Nubra Valley at 3,100m. The Hunder sand dunes with double-humped Bactrian camels against snow peaks is one of the most surreal landscapes in Asia. Overnight in tented camps.
