Lucknow — the City of Nawabs — is one of India's most cultured, gracious and underrated destinations. As the capital of the Awadh kingdom (18th–19th century), Lucknow developed a civilisation renowned across the subcontinent for its tehzeeb (refinement), its poetry, its music, its courtly manners, and above all — its food. The Awadhi cuisine that emerged from the royal kitchens here — dum biryani, galouti kebab, nihari, sheermal — remains among the finest in India. Today Lucknow is a vibrant, modern city of 3 million people that wears its Nawabi heritage with pride: the Bara Imambara (one of the architectural marvels of India), the Rumi Darwaza (modelled on the Ottoman Gateway to Constantinople), the British Residency (a haunting WWI-era ruin), and hundreds of mosques, imambaras and havelis that give the old city its distinctive skyline. A visit to Lucknow is as much about eating and soaking in atmosphere as it is about monuments — and the city does both magnificently.

Places to Visit in Lucknow

Bara Imambara & Bhulbhulaiya

Built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula — one of the largest arched halls in the world, built without any beams or girders. The Bhulbhulaiya (labyrinth) inside has 1,024 narrow passages — only a guide can navigate it. Ticket: ₹25–50.

Rumi Darwaza

A 60-foot ceremonial gateway built in 1784 — modelled on the Sublime Porte in Constantinople. One of the most photographed monuments in Lucknow. Best at dawn for photography with empty streets.

British Residency Ruins

The haunting ruins of the British Residency — scene of the 1857 Siege of Lucknow (5 months, 3,000 defenders). The ruins still bear cannon ball scars. A moving, historically significant site. Sunrise is best.

Hazratganj & Aminabad Bazaars

The twin hearts of Lucknow commerce — Hazratganj (British-era planned boulevard, now upmarket) and Aminabad (the chaotic, atmospheric old city market). Chikan embroidery, attar perfume, kebabs and street food.

  Kathak & Classical Music: Lucknow is the home of the Lucknow gharana of Kathak dance. The Bhatkhande Music Institute (bhatkhande.edu.in) and UP Sangeet Natak Akademi hold regular performances — check programme.

  Eating Etiquette: Lucknow's famous restaurants are unpretentious and often packed. Queue patiently at Tunday. Don't expect air conditioning at old-city food stalls. The experience IS the queue.

  Old City Dress: The old Lucknow area has many active mosques and imambaras. Dress modestly — covered shoulders and legs for both men and women. Scarves recommended.
