Patiala is Punjab's most regal city — the former capital of the Patiala Princely State, whose Sikh Maharajas were among the most powerful and flamboyant rulers in colonial-era India. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh (1891–1938) owned the largest jewel collection in India after the Nizam of Hyderabad, fielded his own cricket team, and was known throughout the British Empire for extraordinary hospitality and style. The city reflects this character — the Qila Mubarak fort palace complex (1763) with its magnificent Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace), the graceful Baradari Palace in its Mughal gardens, and the old city bazaars selling the famous Patiala salwars, parandas (embroidered hair accessories) and phulkari embroidery. Patiala is also the birthplace of the "Patiala peg" — a famously generous measure of whisky that became a cultural institution. Combine with Chandigarh (50 km) for a perfect 2-day Punjab heritage circuit.
