Ranikhet — the "Queen's Meadow" — is one of the Kumaon Hills' most enchanting destinations. At 1,829 metres, this small army cantonment town (headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment) is blessed with dense forests of oak, pine and rhododendron, sweeping views of the Himalayan peaks from Kedarnath to Nanda Devi, a colonial-era golf course, and an atmosphere of unhurried calm that makes it the perfect antidote to Delhi's pace. The town is remarkably clean and green — the Indian Army maintains strict environmental standards. Ancient temples, a heritage market, fruit orchards, and forest walks connect the scattered village settlements that make up Ranikhet. The view of the Himalayan arc from the Golf Course or Upat Meadow on a clear October morning is simply one of the most magnificent in the entire Kumaon region.
