Spiti Valley is one of the most otherworldly landscapes on earth — a cold desert mountain valley at 3,800 metres average altitude, carved by the Spiti River between impossibly steep barren mountains, dotted with ancient Buddhist monasteries perched on clifftops, tiny whitewashed villages, and a sky that is almost always an intense cobalt blue. Often described as "the last village before the sky," Spiti has been inhabited for centuries by Tibetan-Buddhist communities who developed one of the world's most self-sufficient mountain cultures in conditions of extreme cold, altitude and isolation. The valley is only accessible by road from late May to mid-October — in winter, Spiti is completely cut off and temperatures plunge to −30°C. Two routes connect Spiti to the outside world: the Shimla–Kinnaur road (summer and winter) and the Manali–Rohtang road (summer only). For travellers who make the journey, Spiti is transformative — it changes how you think about landscape, silence, and the human capacity for endurance.

Essential Spiti Valley Tips
- 🚙Vehicle: Regular sedans often struggle on Spiti roads. Innova Crysta, Scorpio or 4WD highly recommended. EZPZ's SUV and Innova options are ideal — drivers experienced on these roads.
- 🏥Altitude Sickness: Spiti averages 3,800m. Acclimatise properly — spend nights in Shimla (2,200m) and Kalpa (2,960m) before Kaza. Carry Diamox. Descend immediately if symptoms worsen.
- 📶No Network: BSNL has coverage in Kaza town only. Zero connectivity elsewhere. Download offline maps of the entire Spiti circuit before leaving Shimla. Inform family of your schedule.
- ⛽Last Fuel & ATM: Fill up in Reckong Peo (Kinnaur route) or Manali. Last ATM is in Reckong Peo. Carry at least ₹15,000 cash for 5+ days in Spiti.
- 📋Inner Line Permit: Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Spiti. Apply at District Magistrate office in Reckong Peo or Kaza on arrival. Indians do not need a permit.
