Srinagar — the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir — is one of the most beautiful cities in Asia, a place so celebrated for its natural beauty that it was called "Paradise on Earth" by the Mughal emperors who built their most exquisite gardens here. At 1,585 metres in the Kashmir Valley, surrounded by the 4,000–5,000 metre peaks of the Greater Himalaya, Srinagar is built around the legendary Dal Lake — a 22 sq km expanse of shimmering water where 50,000 people live on floating islands, where the iconic shikaras (wooden gondolas) glide through lotus beds, and where the famous wooden houseboats moored in rows offer the most atmospheric accommodation in India. The Mughal Gardens — Shalimar Bagh (1619), Nishat Bagh (1633), Chashme Shahi — are the finest examples of the Mughal garden tradition outside Agra. The old city has the remarkable Jama Masjid (1394), the Shah-e-Hamdan shrine, and the narrow wood-balconied lanes that are unique to Kashmiri architecture. Kashmir's crafts — pashmina shawls, papier-mâché, walnut wood carving, hand-knotted carpets — are the finest in India. Srinagar is best visited by air (Delhi to Srinagar, 1.5 hours).

Dal Lake & Houseboats

The 22 sq km lake that defines Srinagar — 50,000 people live on floating islands (around 13,000 houseboats and 70+ islands). Stay on a heritage houseboat for the authentic experience. Morning shikara ride through the lotus gardens and floating vegetable markets is unmissable.

Mughal Gardens (Shalimar & Nishat)

Shalimar Bagh (1619, Emperor Jahangir) and Nishat Bagh (1633, Asaf Khan) — the greatest surviving Mughal pleasure gardens. Terraced lawns, ancient chinar trees, fountains, and the mountain backdrop. Spring (April–May, tulip season) and autumn (October) are the most beautiful.

Old City — Jama Masjid & Shah-e-Hamdan

The 14th-century Jama Masjid (built entirely in wood, 1394, with 370 chinar-wood pillars) and the Shah-e-Hamdan shrine (brilliant papier-mâché interior, 1395) are the spiritual centres of the old city. The narrow lanes of the old city — wood-balconied houses — are extraordinary.

Gulmarg (56 km · 2,730m)

A world-class ski resort and mountain meadow — 56 km from Srinagar. The Gulmarg Gondola (Phase 2 reaches 3,980m) is Asia's highest cable car. In winter: world-class skiing on Himalayan powder. In summer: golf on the world's highest golf course, meadow walks.

Essential Srinagar Tips

• ✈️
  Fly, Don't Drive: The Jammu–Srinagar highway (NH-44, 290 km) can close due to weather, landslides or security situations. Flying (1.5 hrs, ₹3,000–7,000) is strongly recommended for time and certainty. Book at IndiGo or Air India.

  Pashmina Buying: Genuine pashmina is expensive (₹3,000–15,000 for a shawl) — be very suspicious of anything sold for ₹500. The Cottage Industries Emporium in Residency Road and Suffering Moses (heritage shop) sell authentic, certified pashmina.
