Yamunotri — the first and westernmost of the four Char Dham shrines — is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the sacred river of Braj and one of the most beloved deities in the Vaishnava tradition. At 3,291 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River, India's second holiest river after the Ganga. The temple is modest in size but magnificent in setting — surrounded by towering snow-covered peaks, hot springs, and the constant roar of the icy Yamuna stream. The unique tradition here is cooking rice and potatoes in the boiling Surya Kund hot spring (88°C) and offering them to the deity — a practise that connects pilgrims to the divine through the everyday act of cooking. Yamunotri requires a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti — less demanding than Kedarnath but equally rewarding.

Yamunotri Temple
Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna with a silver idol. Built by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur. Open May–November. The black marble Divya Shila is worshipped before entering the temple.
Surya Kund Hot Spring
Hottest (88°C) and most sacred of Yamunotri's thermal springs. Pilgrims cook rice, potatoes and offer to deity in cloth bags. Extraordinary sight — steam rising in the cold mountain air.
Saptrishi Kund
7 km beyond Yamunotri at 4,421m. Source of the Yamuna — a glacial lake surrounded by seven peaks. Challenging trekking with no maintained trail. Expedition level only.
Janki Chatti
Base village and start of Yamunotri trek. Hanuman Chatti nearby has confluence of Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna. Nice walks and views from the village.
