Amritsar beyond the Golden Temple has rich history and excellent food. Wagah Border ceremony (30 km) — the India-Pakistan border flag ceremony is dramatic and deeply emotional — arrive 2 hours early. Jallianwala Bagh is a memorial garden where the 1919 massacre happened — moving and important to visit. Partition Museum on Town Hall Chowk tells the story of India's partition in powerful detail. Gobindgarh Fort is a 300-year-old fort recently reopened as a heritage complex. Durgiana Temple (a Hindu counterpart to the Golden Temple) is beautifully designed. Amritsar's food scene — Kesar Da Dhaba (since 1916), kulcha-chole from street stalls — is world class. EZPZ Taxi covers Delhi-Amritsar — call +91-9871121217.

Amritsar is far more than the Golden Temple alone — though the temple will likely be the most powerful experience of your trip. Here's what else is essential:
1. Jallianwala Bagh — 10-Min Walk from Golden Temple
The site of the 1919 Amritsar Massacre — British troops under General Dyer fired into a peaceful crowd of 10,000–20,000 (including women and children) with no warning for 10 minutes. Hundreds were killed.
The original bullet holes are preserved in the walls. A narrow lane recreates the only entrance through which people tried to escape. The well into which many jumped to avoid bullets. It's a devastating, essential visit. Free entry.
2. Wagah Border — 30 km from Amritsar
The daily Beating Retreat Ceremony at sunset — Indian and Pakistani soldiers performing an elaborate, theatrical flag-lowering ceremony with high kicks, synchronized marching, and nationalistic energy on both sides. Thousands of spectators cheering. One of the most extraordinary spectacles in South Asia.
- Timings: 4:15 PM (winter) / 5:45 PM (summer) — varies by season
- Entry: Free, but arrive 1.5–2 hours early for a seat
- EZPZ Taxi return trip from Amritsar: ₹600–800
3. Partition Museum — Town Hall, Amritsar
Opened 2017 — the world's first museum dedicated entirely to the 1947 Partition. Personal testimonies, photographs, artefacts, and oral histories from both sides. Exceptionally moving. Entry: ₹200. Allow 2 hours.
4. Ram Bagh (Company Garden)
A Mughal-style garden built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh — his summer palace is now a museum with weapons, portraits, and royal artefacts from the Sikh Empire. Entry: ₹15.
5. Gobindgarh Fort
A restored 18th-century fort in the city centre — multimedia shows on Punjabi and Sikh history, folk performances, weapons museum. Entry: ₹300–500 depending on package. Evening shows are particularly good.
Amritsar Food — Not to Miss
