Udaipur — the City of Lakes — is Rajasthan's most romantic city, built around a series of artificial lakes with marble palaces rising from the water. Here's a complete guide:
Essential Attractions
1. City Palace — The Crown of Udaipur
The largest palace complex in Rajasthan — built over 400 years by successive Mewar rulers. The palace museum has an extraordinary collection of miniature paintings, royal artefacts, and vintage photographs. The Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) with its mosaic glass peacocks is particularly magnificent.
Entry: Indians ₹250, Foreigners ₹300. Allow 2–3 hours.
2. Lake Pichola Boat Ride
The main lake with the famous Lake Palace (Taj hotel, built 1746 — appears to float on the water) and Jagmandir Palace (island palace). Boat trips depart from the City Palace jetty.
- Public boat: ₹400/person return to Jagmandir Island
- Sunset boat cruise: ₹700/person — best way to photograph the Lake Palace
3. Fateh Sagar Lake
2 km from City Palace — less touristy than Pichola, more local. Nehru Park island (boat: ₹40) in the lake has a café with lake views. Excellent sunset spot on the promenade.
4. Jagdish Temple
A magnificent 17th-century Vishnu temple — 5-minute walk from City Palace. Always busy with worshippers. The carved spire and ornate exterior are among Rajasthan's finest temple architecture.
5. Saheliyon Ki Bari (Garden of Maidens)
Designed for the royal ladies — elaborate fountains, marble pavilions, lotus pools. Entry: ₹50. Best in the morning.
6. Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh, 9 km)
Above the city on a hill — originally a monsoon retreat for the Mewar rulers. Now partially restored. Best for sunset panoramas of Udaipur and all its lakes.
Udaipur Food
- Sunset Terrace at Ambrai Ghat: Lakeside dining with direct view of City Palace illuminated at night — best restaurant setting in Udaipur
- Natraj Dining Hall: Thali restaurant, traditional Rajasthani meal — ₹200, extraordinary value
