McLeodganj — the upper part of Dharamshala — is home to the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan government-in-exile, and a thriving community of Tibetan refugees. It's unlike anywhere else in India.
Spiritual & Cultural
Namgyal Monastery & Tsuglagkhang Temple
The Dalai Lama's personal monastery and the most important Tibetan Buddhist site outside Tibet. The Tsuglagkhang Temple complex includes a 3-storey golden statue of the Buddha — extraordinary. Open daily, entry free.
The Dalai Lama occasionally gives public teachings here — check the schedule at dalailama.com. These are open to foreigners with registration.
Tibet Museum
Documents the Chinese occupation of Tibet and the refugee journey — deeply moving. Free entry. Located in the Tsuglagkhang complex.
Kalachakra Temple
Near the Dalai Lama's residence — ornate murals, meditating monks, peaceful atmosphere.
Trekking
Triund Trek (9 km, 2,828m)
The most popular trek from McLeodganj — a 4–5 hour climb through rhododendron forests to a stunning open ridge with views of the Dhauladhar snowline above and the Kangra Valley below. Camping possible at the top. Best: April–June, September–November. Snow season (Dec–March) requires guide.
Bhagsu Waterfall (3 km from McLeodganj)
Easy walk to a pretty waterfall with a small café at the base. The Bhagsu Nag Temple en route is worth seeing.
Food & Cafes
McLeodganj has North India's best concentration of Tibetan food:
- Momos (steamed/fried dumplings): Every restaurant serves them — best at Tibet Kitchen or Norling Restaurant
- Thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup): Perfect for cold evenings
- Butter tea (Po Cha): Salty, creamy, an acquired taste — try it once
- Jimmy's Italian Kitchen: For when you need pizza after a week of momos
