Chandigarh's location in the Shivalik foothills makes it a superb base for day trips — hill stations, heritage sites, and wildlife reserves all within 100 km.

Top Day Trips from Chandigarh

1. Shimla — 90 km (2.5 hrs)

The most popular Chandigarh day trip or overnight. Drive via Kalka — the winding mountain road from Kalka to Shimla (90 km, 2.5 hrs) is itself the experience. Mall Road, Jakhu Temple, Kufri. 👉 Shimla full guide

2. Kasauli — 65 km (1.5 hrs)

A quiet, intimate hill station at 1,795m — smaller than Shimla, no vehicles in the main cantonment area. Beautiful walks through pine and oak forests, the Monkey Point (1,980m) viewpoint, and the old British church. Perfect for a quiet day out.

3. Morni Hills — 45 km (1 hr)

Haryana's only hill station — modest in elevation (1,220m) but lovely twin lakes (Tikkar Taal), forested ridges, and a striking absence of crowds. Excellent for bird watching.

4. Pinjore Gardens (Yadavindra Gardens) — 20 km

Mughal-style stepped gardens (7 terraces) with fountains — well-maintained and photogenic. Built in the 17th century. Entry: ₹20. Good for 1–2 hours.

5. Anandpur Sahib — 90 km

One of Sikhism's holiest sites — the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum here is one of India's finest museums architecturally and in content. Designed by Moshe Safdie. The Anandpur Sahib Gurudwara during Hola Mohalla (March) sees extraordinary Sikh martial arts demonstrations.

6. Bhakra Nangal Dam — 90 km

One of India's largest dams — the enormous reservoir (Gobind Sagar Lake) stretches for miles. Impressive engineering, boat rides on the lake, and a small dam viewpoint.
