Kurukshetra is the holy land of the Bhagavad Gita where the epic battle of Mahabharata was fought. It is 170 km from Delhi on NH44 taking about 2.5–3 hours. Brahma Sarovar is the most sacred tank in Kurukshetra — beautiful and serene. Jyotisar is where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is very ancient. Sheikh Chilli's Tomb is a beautiful Mughal structure. Panorama and Sound & Light Show at Kurukshetra is excellent. Kurukshetra in Haryana is one of the most historically and spiritually significant sites in India — the battlefield of the Mahabharata war, and the place where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. Every Hindu pilgrim considers it deeply sacred.

Why Kurukshetra is Famous

  • Kurukshetra Battlefield: The 18-day Mahabharata war between the Pandavas and Kauravas was fought here (~3000 BCE in tradition). The entire 48 kos Kurukshetra region is considered sacred ground
  • Brahma Sarovar: A vast sacred tank — one of the holiest in Hinduism. Taking a dip during a solar eclipse here is considered as meritorious as all other pilgrimages combined. On normal days it's a serene, beautiful site
  • Bhagavad Gita delivered here: At Jyotisar (8 km from Kurukshetra), a pipal tree marks where Krishna spoke the Gita to Arjuna. A Brahma Sarovar and Krishna-Arjuna chariot statue make it very photogenic
  • Kurukshetra Museum: Excellent exhibits on the Mahabharata and the region's archaeology
  • Panorama and Science Centre: A circular diorama depicting Mahabharata battle scenes — surprisingly well-done
