Jodhpur Travel Guide

What Are the Popular Tourist Spots in Jodhpur? Complete Travel Guide

Jodhpur β€” the Blue City β€” is Rajasthan's second-largest city and one of its most dramatically beautiful. Dominated by the massive Mehrangarh Fort rising 125m above the city on a sheer rock outcrop, Jodhpur spreads below in a sea of blue-painted houses β€” a visual that is unlike anywhere else in the world. The fort, the blue city, the bustling clock tower market, and the warm Rajasthani hospitality make Jodhpur one of North India's great travel destinations.

Getting to Jodhpur from Delhi: 600 km via NH48 through Jaipur and NH62 β€” 9–11 hours by road. EZPZ Taxi offers Delhi to Jodhpur outstation cabs β€” call +91-9871121217 or book at ezpztaxi.com. Jodhpur is also connected by train (Mandore Express from Delhi β€” 9.5 hours) and flights.

1. Mehrangarh Fort β€” One of India's Greatest Forts

Rising 125m above city | Open: 9 AM – 5 PM | Entry: β‚Ή200 Indians, β‚Ή600 foreigners

Mehrangarh Fort is simply one of the finest forts in India β€” possibly the finest. Built beginning in 1459 by Rao Jodha (founder of Jodhpur), it sprawls across 1,200 acres on a sheer rocky outcrop, with massive walls up to 36m high and 21m wide.

What to see inside:

Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace): The principal durbar hall with magnificent stained glass windows β€” 5 latticed jali windows depicting peacocks in perfect geometric precision. The interplay of coloured light through these windows is extraordinary.

Phool Mahal (Flower Palace): The Maharaja's pleasure chamber β€” the most ornately gilded room in Rajasthan, with gold-leaf ceiling, intricate mirror work, and 18th-century court miniature paintings.

Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace): Walls and ceiling covered with Belgian crystal mirrors and coloured glass.

Takhat Vilas: The personal chamber of Maharaja Takhat Singh with Christmas baubles embedded in the ceiling (he loved them and ordered thousands from Europe).

Zenana Deodi: The quarters where royal ladies lived β€” multiple carved jali screens allowed them to observe court proceedings without being seen.

Museum galleries: Outstanding collection of elephant howdahs (royal seats), royal cradles (including the most elaborately carved gold cradle you'll ever see), Mughal armour and weapons, royal portraits, and palanquins.

The cannon battery: Ancient cannons line the outer ramparts β€” the views from here of the blue city below, stretching to the horizon, are extraordinary.

The fort's construction story: Mehrangarh was built on the spot occupied by a hermit called Cheeria Nathji β€” who cursed the fort's builders saying the city would face water scarcity. Rao Jodha buried a man alive in the fort's foundations to satisfy the curse β€” and the water issues of Jodhpur have been a historical reality. The story is told in detail inside.

Audio guide: Excellent audio guide narrated by Prince Gaj Singh β€” highly recommended. Included in foreigners' ticket, β‚Ή100 extra for Indians.

2. The Blue City β€” Wandering the Old Lanes

The blue-painted houses of old Jodhpur (Brahmpuri and surrounding areas below the fort) are Jodhpur's most iconic visual. Walking these narrow lanes is one of Rajasthan's great pleasures.

Why are the houses blue? The most popular explanation: blue was traditionally the colour of Brahmin (priestly caste) houses β€” as they were painted with copper sulfate-based indigo wash to deter insects. Over time, others adopted the colour. The practical benefit (keeping houses cool in Jodhpur's intense heat) and the visual effect (the entire hillside turning blue from a distance) made it a city-wide tradition.

Best areas to walk:
- Navchokiya (neighbourhood below the fort's northeast) β€” densest concentration of blue houses
- Brahmpuri β€” the traditional Brahmin quarter
- The lanes between Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) and the fort base

Getting lost is the point β€” Jodhpur's old city is one of the most rewarding places in India to simply wander without a plan.

3. Jaswant Thada β€” Marble Cenotaph & Gardens

500m from Mehrangarh | Open: 9 AM – 5 PM | Entry: β‚Ή30 Indians, β‚Ή50 foreigners

Jaswant Thada is a beautiful white marble memorial built in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of his father Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The thin white marble panels of the cenotaph are translucent β€” sunlight glows through them, giving the building an ethereal luminosity.

The surrounding garden terraces step down the hillside with a peaceful lake at the base β€” on a clear day, the reflection of Mehrangarh Fort in the water with Jaswant Thada in the foreground is one of Jodhpur's finest compositions for photography.

Portrait gallery inside: Paintings of the Jodhpur royal family and historical miniatures.

4. Umaid Bhawan Palace β€” Living Royal Heritage

Central Jodhpur | Museum open: 9 AM – 5 PM | Entry: β‚Ή100 Indians, β‚Ή200 foreigners

Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the world's last great palaces β€” built between 1929 and 1943 and covering 26 acres, with 347 rooms. It is still the home of the current Maharaja of Jodhpur, Gaj Singh II β€” and simultaneously a luxury Taj hotel and a museum.

Why was it built? After a devastating famine left the Jodhpur people unemployed, Maharaja Umaid Singh commissioned the palace as a public works project to provide employment β€” 3,000 workers worked for 15 years.

The architecture: Indo-Saracenic and Art Deco β€” one of the very few examples of Art Deco palace architecture in India. The interiors are extraordinary β€” vintage crystal, Art Deco furniture, and 1930s luxury throughout.

Museum wing: Houses vintage cars (including a 1930s Rolls Royce), the Maharaja's trophy room, royal photographs, and Art Deco artifacts.

Taj hotel section: Non-guests can have afternoon tea on the lawns (with prior permission) or dine at Pillars Restaurant.

5. Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) and Sardar Market

City centre | Open: Always | Market: 9 AM – 9 PM

Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) is the heart of old Jodhpur and one of the most colourful market areas in Rajasthan. Built in the 19th century, the clock tower watches over the Sardar Market β€” a vibrant bazaar where everyday Jodhpur life and tourist shopping intersect.

What to buy:
- Jodhpuri fabric and textile: The distinctive cotton prints of Jodhpur in bright blues, reds, and whites
- Silver jewellery: Especially the heavy silver anklets and tribal jewellery of the Rajasthani tradition
- Spices: The market has excellent spice shops β€” Jodhpur is famous for its spice blends
- Mojari shoes: Traditional embroidered Rajasthani leather footwear in vivid colours
- Tie-dye bandhani scarves and fabrics

Street food at Ghanta Ghar:
- Mirchi Vada: Jodhpur's signature street food β€” large green chillies stuffed with spiced potato, battered and deep-fried. A must-eat.
- Mawa Kachori: Sweet kachori stuffed with mawa (reduced milk) and dry fruits β€” unique to Jodhpur
- Makhaniya Lassi: Thick, creamy saffron lassi with a pat of butter on top β€” Jodhpur specialty

6. Mandore Gardens

9 km from Jodhpur | Open: 8 AM – 8 PM | Entry: Free

Mandore was the capital of the Marwar kingdom before Jodhpur was founded. The garden complex houses:

- Royal cenotaphs (chhatris) of the former Jodhpur rulers β€” extraordinarily carved, each in a distinctive style
- Hall of Heroes: Rock-cut life-size figures of 16 heroes and deities of Rajasthani folk tradition, painted in vivid natural colours β€” highly unusual and impressive
- Temple of the 330 Million Gods: Ancient temple with colourful folk imagery of the Hindu pantheon
- Deer park: Several chital deer wander freely in the gardens

The gardens are beautiful in the early morning β€” green lawns, ancient trees, and the cenotaphs catching the golden light.

7. Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

Adjacent to Mehrangarh Fort | Open: 8 AM – 7 PM | Entry: β‚Ή100 Indians, β‚Ή200 foreigners

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is a remarkable ecological restoration project covering 72 acres of rocky land at the base of Mehrangarh. The park has restored the native desert plant ecosystem (which had been invaded by invasive species) and created beautiful walking trails through the rocky landscape with views of the fort above.

A guided walk through the park identifies desert plants, geological formations, and birds. The rock formations themselves β€” massive outcrops of the Vindhyan Supergroup (some of the world's oldest rock formations, over 1.7 billion years old) β€” are geologically fascinating.

Jodhpur Food

- Gypsy Restaurant β€” popular budget option near the fort, reliable Rajasthani food
- On the Rocks (Ajit Bhawan Hotel) β€” fine dining, excellent kebabs and Rajasthani cuisine
- Shri Mishrilal Hotel (Sardar Market area) β€” legendary for makhaniya lassi since 1927
