Mathura is one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) and the birthplace of Lord Krishna — making it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in India. At just 160 km from Delhi, it is perfectly placed for a day trip or a short overnight, and pairs naturally with Vrindavan (11 km away) and Agra (58 km) on the classic "Braj–Agra" circuit. The Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple complex — built on the site of the prison cell where Krishna was born — is the spiritual heart of Mathura. The city has 25 ghats on the Yamuna River, of which Vishram Ghat (where Krishna is believed to have rested after killing the demon Kansa) is the most sacred and the setting for a nightly aarti. Mathura is also the home of the Braj region's distinctive culture — the Holi celebrations here are legendary, the sweets (peda, mathura ka halwa) are famous throughout India, and the artisans making brass and stone Krishna idols have been at work for generations.

Places to Visit in Mathura
Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple
The temple complex marking the exact birthplace of Lord Krishna — the prison cell of Kansa where Devaki gave birth. Extraordinary spiritual energy. Security check mandatory. Photography of the birthplace cell not permitted.
Vishram Ghat & Yamuna Aarti
The most sacred ghat in Mathura — where Krishna rested after slaying Kansa. Nightly Yamuna aarti at sunset (smaller but deeply authentic compared to Varanasi). 25 ghats stretch along the river — boat ride recommended.
Dwarkadhish Temple (1814)
One of Mathura's most magnificent temples — dedicated to Krishna as the King of Dwarka. Extraordinary exterior carvings and a gold-plated interior. Most active during morning and evening aartis.
Mathura Museum (Government Museum)
One of India's finest collections of Mathura school sculpture — 2nd century BCE to 12th century CE. The red sandstone Kushana-period Buddha and Krishna sculptures here are world-class. Entry ₹15.
Experiences & Activities
- 🛕Krishna Janmabhoomi Darshan: The prison cell birthplace of Krishna is deeply sacred — small, intimate and profoundly moving. Morning darshan (6–8 AM) before the crowds. Security check at entrance.
- 🌊Yamuna Boat Ride & Ghats: Row boat along all 25 ghats (₹100–200, 45 min). Vishram Ghat, Swami Ghat, Gau Ghat — each has its mythology. Evening aarti at Vishram Ghat at sunset is the day's perfect ending.
- 🎨Holi in Braj (March): The Braj region invented Holi — the festival here is a week-long cultural event. Lathmar Holi at Barsana (45 km, women beat men with sticks), flower Holi at Vrindavan, colour Holi at Nandgaon. Plan 4–6 months ahead — accommodation books out.
- 🍬Mathura Peda & Sweet Trail: Mathura's milk-based peda (sweetened condensed milk fudge) is famous across India. Buy from Brijwasi Mithaiwale (the most famous shop, since 1887) near Krishna Janmabhoomi. Also: mathura ka halwa, khurchan.
