Mathura and Vrindavan are the twin holy cities of Lord Krishna, 145–160 km from Delhi. In Mathura: Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple (birthplace of Krishna) is the most important shrine. Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna is beautiful especially at sunset. Dwarkadhish Temple is a magnificent 19th-century temple. In Vrindavan (15 km from Mathura): Banke Bihari Temple is the most beloved Krishna temple — crowds are intense during morning darshan. ISKCON Vrindavan is a grand modern temple complex. Prem Mandir is stunning especially when lit up at night. Visit during Holi (March) for an extraordinary Braj Holi experience. Mathura and Vrindavan together form the Braj region — the most sacred land in Vaishnavism, where Lord Krishna was born, grew up, and played. They're 10 km apart and always visited together.

Mathura — Birthplace of Krishna

Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple Complex

The most sacred site — marks the exact prison cell where Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva. The complex includes a temple and the adjacent Shahi Eidgah mosque (disputed site). Heavy security, no photography inside the main cell. Very active with pilgrims.

Dwarkadhish Temple (1814)

Beautiful, ornate Rajasthani-style temple with vivid wall paintings and a very active darshan schedule. Most photogenic temple in Mathura.

Vishram Ghat

Krishna is said to have rested (vishram) here after killing Kansa. 25 ghats line the Yamuna River here. Boat rides available — ₹50–100 for 30 minutes. Aarti at the ghat every evening.

Vrindavan — Where Krishna Played

Banke Bihari Temple

One of India's most spiritually electric temples — no photography allowed, no continuous darshan. The curtain opens for a few seconds, then closes — so worshippers keep their gaze intensely focused. The experience is intense.

ISKCON Temple (Krishna Balarama Mandir)

Clean, well-managed, open to all — the Hare Krishna movement's most important Indian temple. Excellent for international visitors. Free entry, kirtan (devotional music) throughout the day.

Prem Mandir (Temple of Divine Love)

Built 2001–2012 — entirely white Italian marble, intricate carvings, ₹70 crore construction cost. Illuminated at night beautifully. Depicts scenes from Krishna's life in carved relief. Entry: free.

Nidhivan

The mystical forest — believed to be where Krishna and Radha still dance at night. Gates locked at sunset, no one allowed in after dark. Ancient twisted trees, extraordinary atmosphere.
