Sariska Tiger Reserve is one of India's great wildlife comeback stories. By 2004, poaching had wiped out its entire tiger population. But through a landmark relocation program — tigers brought from Ranthambore — Sariska now has 25+ tigers and is one of the best tiger reserves within striking distance of Delhi, at just 195 km (under 4 hours). The 881 sq km reserve has dramatic Aravalli terrain of scrub forest, rocky outcrops and dry deciduous woodland. Within the reserve lie the extraordinary ruins of Kankwari Fort — a 17th century Mughal stronghold where Aurangzeb imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh — accessible only by safari jeep. This combination of tigers and Mughal history inside a single reserve is unique in India. Beyond tigers: leopard, jungle cat, hyena, jackal, sambar, nilgai and 200+ bird species.
