Vrindavan — the "forest of Vrinda (Tulsi)" — is the sacred town where Lord Krishna spent his childhood and adolescence, the land of his divine play (leela) with the gopis, and one of the most emotionally resonant pilgrimage destinations in all of Hinduism. At just 11 km from Mathura and 165 km from Delhi, Vrindavan is a compact town of 5,000+ temples, sacred groves (kunjas), and the beloved Yamuna River, where every lane, every tree and every stone is associated with a Krishna story. The Banke Bihari Temple has perhaps the most ecstatic atmosphere of any temple in India — devotees sway, sing and weep before the beloved idol. The ISKCON Temple (Chandrodaya Mandir) is architecturally magnificent and internationally renowned. The Prem Mandir is a modern marvel of white marble, spectacular when illuminated at night. Vrindavan during Holi is a week-long festival of flowers, colours and devotion that has no parallel anywhere in the world.

Places to Visit in Vrindavan

Banke Bihari Temple

The most beloved temple in Vrindavan — the curtain before the idol is drawn every few minutes (legend says the idol's gaze is so powerful it must be veiled). The bhajan singing and collective devotion here are extraordinary. Morning and evening aartis are magical.

ISKCON Temple (Chandrodaya Mandir)

The international Hare Krishna movement's main Vrindavan temple — architecturally grand, with exquisite Radha-Krishna deities, Vedic museum, and daily cultural programmes. Open to all. The evening aarti and kirtan are joyful and beautifully performed.

Prem Mandir

A contemporary white marble temple complex of extraordinary beauty — multiple levels, large grounds, illuminated fountains at night. The Krishna and Radha tableaux in marble are intricately detailed. Spectacular when lit up after 7 PM.

Seva Kunj & Nidhivan

Seva Kunj — the sacred grove where Krishna and Radha are believed to perform their eternal raas leela each night. The caretakers say no human remains inside after sunset. Nidhivan adjacent has a similar mythology. Deeply sacred, atmospheric spaces.

  Holi in Vrindavan (March): Phoolon Wali Holi (flower Holi) at Banke Bihari — priests shower the crowd with flower petals from above. Widow Holi at the ashrams — a moving celebration of life. Rang Panchami — the colour festival. Book 3–4 months ahead.

  Yamuna Evening Walk: The ghats of Vrindavan on the Yamuna at sunset are deeply peaceful. Keshi Ghat is the most atmospheric — the river, the setting sun, the sound of temple bells. A short boat ride (₹100) in the golden hour is lovely.

  Evening Kirtan: Vrindavan's temple kirtans (devotional singing) are some of the most joyful musical experiences in India. The ISKCON evening programme is particularly well-organised and open to all. Banke Bihari bhajans are deeply moving.

  Monkeys: Vrindavan has tens of thousands of sacred monkeys — they WILL snatch food, sunglasses, phones from your hands. Keep bags closed and hold belongings tightly, especially near temples.

  Dress Code: Covered clothing for all temples — shoulders and knees covered. Some temples ask women to cover their heads. Remove shoes at all temple entrances.
