Dehradun — capital of Uttarakhand — is the gracious, well-planned city in the Doon Valley between the Shivalik and Lesser Himalayan ranges, at 640 metres. It is less a destination in itself and more the hub from which all of Uttarakhand's greatest experiences radiate: Mussoorie (35 km), Rishikesh (46 km), Haridwar (54 km), Corbett (150 km) and the Char Dham route north. That said, Dehradun has its own distinct character — it is home to some of India's most prestigious institutions (the Indian Military Academy, Forest Research Institute, Survey of India, Doon School, Rashtriya Indian Military College) giving it an intellectual and disciplined air unusual in Indian cities. The colonial-era Forest Research Institute (FRI) campus — a magnificent Gregorian-style building in 450 acres of forested grounds — is one of the finest pieces of colonial architecture in India and a remarkable museum. The Robber's Cave (Gucchupani) and Sahastradhara (thousand-fold spring) are popular natural sites. Paltan Bazaar and Rajpur Road give Dehradun a lively, sophisticated city character that serves as a pleasant base.

Places to Visit in Dehradun
Forest Research Institute (1929)
One of India's finest colonial buildings — a Gregorian-style campus in 450 acres of forested grounds. The building itself is magnificent; inside are six excellent museums on forestry, timber, ecology and entomology. The quadrangle and lawns are often used for film shoots. Entry ₹40.
Robber's Cave (Gucchupani)
A natural cave-river system 8 km from Dehradun — the stream disappears underground and re-emerges, creating a walk through a natural cave with cold water. Very popular with families. Entry ₹25. Carry extra clothes.
Sahastradhara (Thousand-fold Spring)
Sulphur springs and limestone cave formations 14 km from Dehradun — the water is believed to have medicinal properties. Ropeway (₹100 return) gives valley views. Pleasant setting beside a small river.
Mindrolling Monastery (1965)
One of the largest Buddhist centres in India — a Nyingmapa Tibetan Buddhist monastery with magnificent stupas, thangkas and a 103-foot Great Stupa. The monastery grounds are peaceful and beautiful.
Experiences & Activities
- 🏛️Forest Research Institute Tour: Allow 3 hours — the building architecture alone justifies the visit. The museums inside are well-curated and educational. The lawn and forest walks are excellent for birding.
- 🚡Mussoorie Day Trip (35 km): The classic Dehradun excursion — drive to Mussoorie (45 min), spend the day at Mall Road, Landour and Gun Hill ropeway, return to Dehradun for the night. Or stay overnight in Mussoorie.
- 🏞️Rajaji National Park (24 km): The foothills national park at the base of the Shivaliks — elephant, tiger, leopard, chital, wild boar. Jeep safaris from Chilla and Motichur ranges. Less famous than Corbett but with excellent wildlife.
- 🛒Paltan Bazaar & Rajpur Road: Paltan Bazaar for Uttarakhand local products — basmati rice, litchi honey, rhododendron jam, hemp products, local pickles. Rajpur Road for the city's sophisticated cafe and restaurant scene.
