Mussoorie — the "Queen of Hills" — is one of the most popular hill stations in India, a charming ridge-top town at 2,005 metres in the Garhwal Himalaya overlooking Dehradun valley and the Doon Valley. Just 295 km from Delhi (6 hours), Mussoorie has been a beloved escape since the British established it in 1820 — its colonial architecture, the famous Mall Road, Gun Hill viewpoint and the timeless Camel's Back Road have attracted everyone from Jawaharlal Nehru to Ruskin Bond (who has lived in Mussoorie's Landour quarter for decades). The higher, quieter Landour cantonment area — with its ancient clock tower, deodar-shaded lanes, Char Dukan corner and Ruskin Bond's neighbourhood — is the most atmospheric part of Mussoorie and a world away from the crowded Mall Road. Kempty Falls (15 km) is the famous waterfall excursion. George Everest's House (6 km) gives panoramic views of the Himalayas. Mussoorie is also the natural gateway to Haridwar (104 km) and Rishikesh (79 km).

Places to Visit in Mussoorie
Mall Road & Camel's Back Road
The 2 km Mall Road is Mussoorie's social promenade — colonial shops, cafes, the famous Library (1843). Camel's Back Road (3 km parallel) is quieter and more beautiful — a forest walk with Himalayan views and the famous Camel's Back rock formation.
Landour Cantonment
The higher, quieter cantonment above Mussoorie — 600m further up. Char Dukan corner (four old shops, wonderful chai and omelettes), Landour Clock Tower, Ruskin Bond's neighbourhood (he is sometimes seen at the Char Dukan), and deodar-lined lanes.
Gun Hill (2,122m · Ropeway)
The second-highest point in Mussoorie — accessible by ropeway from Mall Road (₹100 return) or short walk. Panoramic views of the Doon Valley and Bandarpunch, Swargarohini and other Himalayan peaks. Best at dawn.
Kempty Falls (15 km)
The most famous waterfall near Mussoorie — a 40-foot cascade over a rocky cliff. Very crowded on weekends and in summer — arrive early morning. The drive through deodar forest to reach it is half the pleasure.
Experiences & Activities
- 🚶Landour Morning Walk: Start at Char Dukan (7 AM, breakfast of aloo parathas and chai). Walk the Landour loop through deodar forest. Spot Ruskin Bond's house (St. Paul's Church lane). Visit the old Landour Language School. 3 km, 1.5 hours — the best Mussoorie walk.
- 🚡Gun Hill Ropeway: Morning ropeway to Gun Hill (₹100 return). The Himalayan panorama on clear days (October–April) includes Bandarpunch, Swargarohini and glimpses of the high peaks. First ride at 8 AM for best visibility before clouds form.
- 🌊Kempty Falls (15 km): Drive through Barlowganj and Bhadraj. Arrive at Kempty before 9 AM to avoid crowds. The waterfall creates a natural pool — swimming is possible but very crowded in summer. The surrounding forest walk is pleasant.
- 📚George Everest's House (6 km): The home and laboratory of Sir George Everest (the man after whom the mountain is named) — at 2,012m with extraordinary 180° views of the Himalaya and Doon Valley. Ruins are romantic and the views are among Mussoorie's best.
